TAIPEI ASSOCIATION FOR THE PROMOTION OF WOMEN'S RIGHTS, SERVICE ACTIVITIES AND PERFORMANCE RESULTS FOR THE PAST 3 YEARS (1994-1997)

item I. SERVICE ACTIVITIES:

    The Taipei Association for the Promotion of Women's Rights (TAPWR) was established in 1994. Since then, the Association has grown as the number of active women signing up for membership grew. Our Association has a wide scope of activities and services, with some of the major ones listed below:

    1. Host "The Tales of A Hundred Grandmothers" and "The Tales of My Mom" writing contests to encourage women to write and to collect historical data on Taiwanese women's lives. Hold "Oral History Classes" to establish a foundation for gathering Taiwaness women's stories.

    2. Host "Difficulties in Caring for Aged Women Seminars," and publish "Caring for Aged Women Handbook," to voice concerns to society regarding circumstances involving aged women.

    3. Establish "Infant & Baby Sitting Task Force" to investigate related issues, and to formulate a policy recommendation report for the consideration of government and private units as well as for individual references.

    4. Establish "Marriage Violence Prevention and Action Task Force" to recommend policy and formulate reports. Sponsor "Marriage Violence Family Crisis Professional Volunteers Training Program" to train volunteers to assist abused women. Conduct family violence prevention seminars in local communities.

    5. Conduct "Youth Sex Education" plan, penetrate intermediate schools and arrange speeches on "Youth, Sex, and Lifestyles." Conduct periodical sampling surveys on youth perception of sex, and publicize such reports to achieve better research results and understanding. Publish "Youth, Sex and Lifestyle" handbook for youngsters to refer to, and conduct relevant classes for school teachers and parents to enhance communications.

    6. Host "Women Health Seminar" to inform women about personal health and medical treatment rights, and to conduct health surveys on women at the same time, results of which are used for health policy or program evaluation and planning. Establish a cooperative network with other women's health organizations worldwide, to share experiences and information, and to participate in international conventions on women's health.

    7. Hold "Women's Self-Awareness Group" classes every so often to promote self awareness in women, and to increase women's independent problem solving skills.

    8. Conduct "Career Planning for Women" camp, which help women elevate self confidence, plan career goals, and participate as an active part of the work force.

    9. Sponsor "Book Reading Groups," "Discussion Seminars," and "Policy Research Task Force" to give women better understanding and relation to herself, society, and the surrounding environment through interaction.

    10. Produce radio talk shows to promote equal rights for women. Publish "Purple Sisters' Bulletin" to keep members informed of activities and events.

    11. Provide women of all ages and profession the chance to continue learning and studying through the formation of a Women's Community College, as sponsored by the Taipei Municipal Department of Social Services.

item II. PERFORMANCE RESULTS FOR THE PAST THREE YEARS:

  1. "The Tales of A Hundred Grandmothers" writing contest received the "Most Innovative Social Services for Women Award" from the Municipal Department of Social Services in June of 1995 due to its meaningfulness. At the same time, the publication of "The Tales of My Mom" and "Disappearing Taiwanese Grandmothers" received praise and attention from the literature industry as well as society as a whole. There are plans to produce more publications soon.

  2. The "Youth Sex Education Promotion" plan received the "1995 Women Educational Services Award" from the Taipei Municipal Department of Social Services' Annual Women's' Benefit Services Evaluation Program. It was an honor to receive acknowledgment and affirmation from the Evaluation panel as well as societal women as a whole. The parent-child conferences conducted at different intermediate and high schools also received good word and support from different sectors. The published "1996 Taipei Intermediate and High School Survey on Youth and Attitude Toward Sex" provided valuable references for schools as well as relevant educational and service groups.

  3. During the 1994 Taipei Mayoral elections, we successfully introduced a complete "Infant & Baby Sitting Plan" into candidates' agenda, and subsequently placed the plans in to effect as part of government policy.

  4. "Difficulties in Caring for Aged Women Seminars" received a lot of attention, the response has generated discussion on benefit plans for aged women care.

  5. The "Marriage Violence Family Crisis Professional Volunteers Training Program" has trained over 70 volunteers, and they are penetrating into local communities to conduct family violence prevention seminars and educational programs, as well as to provide information, counseling and references.

  6. Promoting "Women Health Seminar" in the local communities, and to conduct health surveys on women to get a better understanding on the health related needs of women received strong support and care from women. This program received the "1996 Women Health Services Award" from the Taipei Municipal Department of Health. Established links and cooperative relations with international women's health organizations and conferences, including: Asian Women and Health Network, and Women's International Public Health Network.

  7. "Women's Self-Awareness Group Classes," "Career Planning for Women Camp" has helped numerous women in better understanding themselves as well as the societal environment, in rebuilding their lives, elevating work abilities, and actually taking jobs.

  8. Radio talk shows and the "Purple Sisters' Bulletin" on top of other women's rights activities has brought attention and growth to this Association. Our penetration to reach women at the root level will promote and realize a truly equal right society.
